Spring 2019 Bridal Beauty: Edgy Meets Ethereal

AS REPORTED BY DANA WOOD, BEAUTY DIRECTOR

Talk about pushing the envelope. For the ultra-talented hair and makeup teams that worked the Spring ’19 Bridal Fashion Week circuit in New York, it was all about the edgy tweak. Did every attempt at breaking out of the “boring beauty” box work? Frankly, no. But a lot of it did. Here are our absolute fave looks:

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD: The Buzzcuts, Micro-Bangs and Kahlo Brows
Of course the Godmother of Punk wasn’t playing it safe. Though she threw in a red lip here and there for femininity’s sake, it was offset by the borderline unibrow and unconventional coifs.

REEM ACRA: The Bouquets for Days
If you’re sporting a flower crown on your big day, might as well go massive, right? Ban the wimpy baby’s breath! What really made these towering headpieces work was the pop of silver on the lids. That tiny burst of metal kept the whole vibe cool, not cartoony.

MIRA ZWILLINGER: The Spring “Snow”
Yes it was a long winter, especially for New Yorkers. But that doesn’t stop snowflakes from captivating us with their sheer natural beauty. Zwillinger’s brides looked like they’d just zipped through a snowy forest to make it to the altar on time, and the effect was magical.

GRACY ACCAD: The Peachy Power Cheeks and Pillowy Updos
You can’t argue with monochrome makeup – it just flat-out works. Especially in peach, which is flattering to just about every complexion on the planet. Paired with an ethereal updo, a peachy palette is a win-win.

NAEEM KHAN: The Sky-High ‘Hawks and Black Eyes
File under “Not For Everyone.” Still, this was – by far - one of the coolest beauty pairings of the week. It had “after party” written all over it. What else would you wear with a bridal tracksuit?

VERA WANG: The Botticelli Curls, Blunt Bobs and Endless Dreads
Gowns that incredible need hair and makeup with equal oomph. And while Wang typically puts forth a more Goth type of beauty vision, this season was unapologetically pretty. A breath of fresh air from one of the category’s most cerebral designers.

BERTA: The Almost-Cornrows and Icy Eyes
There was a lot going on here, and all of it worked. Yes, it can be challenging to pull off a center part, particularly when it’s stretched taut with a single cornrow-style braid on either side. But balanced with white shadow and petal pink lips, the full effect was captivating.

VIKTOR & ROLF: Preppy Bobs and Soft ‘Fros
Elegance isn’t always the main takeaway at these daring Dutch masters’ shows, but this season they really brought the sleek. Center-parted bobs and airy afros married beautifully to the collection’s clean lines.
